This is what Ray Allen will probably hear from Doc Rivers and Danny Ainge in a few days to convince him he should return to Boston.
Ray, we started something here back in 2008 that we all want to see through to its end. We came a game away from beating the new champions and we did it despite all the accumulating injuries we had to overcome all year long. Now we're back at full strength and with enough reinforcement to make sure those injuries never haunt us again late in the playoffs. The only thing missing from this puzzle is you. Ray, I hope more than anyone, you can appreciate that this isn't a team, but a family. And you're one of the primary members of our family. We are committed to winning and we are committed to you because not only do you make our chance of winning more possible but also more meaningful. What do you say, brother?
Or, if you want to take all the sentimentality out of the equation, what they really mean to say is, we don't want you to go to Miami because you'll put those guys OVER THE TOP! Come on baby, don't! Please don't do it! I'll give you the keys to my car! Heck, I'll give you the keys to my wife's car! I'll even sing "Love the Way you Lie" if you want me to! Just don't goooo!
Ah yes. This is what you call addition by subtraction by addition.
So what if re-signing Ray Allen will create a logjam at the shooting guard position in Boston.
Who cares if they have to dip into their Let's Get Rondo a Psychologist or at least a puppy fund.
The only incentive in Boston's mind for retaining Ray Allen is that if Miami gets him, it will basically erase everything they've tried to achieve over the summer.
Why else would they need him after signing Jason Terry?
Are they preparing to make him the highest paid employee to ever work at the concession stand of TD Waterhouse Arena?
It just doesn't make sense without the Miami angle.
The only question is, does Ray Allen realize this?
Sure, I know it's not easy to leave a group of guys as tight as the Celtics seem to have been over the years.
And I can appreciate the three extra million dollars they are offering in comparison to Miami on top of a no-trade clause.
But, at the end of the day, he's deciding between a major role on a championship contender and a smaller role on a championship pretender.
Besides, business decisions like this aren't supposed to be made with your heart but your head.
Let's hope he makes the right one.
